Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

Renewable energy is that obtained from inexhaustible natural sources, some because of the vast amount of energy they contain and others because they are able to regenerate by natural means.

Solar energy is one of them. Each year the sun’s rays provide the Earth with energy equivalent to several thousand times the amount of energy consumed by humanity. If obtained, for example, by photovoltaic solar panels, it can be transformed into electrical energy which is then discharged into the power grid, thus generating income.

At SÍNTEGRA we clearly support renewable energy as an alternative which is sustainable, functional and respects the environment.

Some of the types of renewable energy which we work with are:


Photovoltaic installations
It deals with installations principally made up of photovoltaic modules, which take advantage of the solar energy to generate electricity.

Depending on where the installation is carried out, it can be subdivided into:
•Ground installations
• Deck installations > More information
• Isolated installations

The deck and ground installations are connected to the power grid, with the intention of selling it to electricity generating companies.
On the other hand, the isolated installations are intended for supplying electric power to dwellings or buildings where the national grid is not available. In this case, these systems must have batteries to store part of the generated electricity so as to be able to obtain electric current when there is no sun.

These installations can be carried out either on the decks of industrial warehouses or dwellings as well as directly on the ground. In this last case, the current legislation in Catalonia for obtaining permits is a difficult process, taking up to one year or more.

One of our projects of Renewable Energy are the one that we developed in 2008 for COMAJORDANA.

Solar thermal power installations
Used for the following applications:
• Domestic hotwater
• Radiant floor heating
• Acclimatization of swimming pools
• Solar cooling
• Hotwater for industrial processes

The installations for domestic hot water can be carried out not only for individual dwellings but also for collective dwellings, sports installations, hotels, residential homes, hospitals...

The radiant floor heating systems are used principally for individual dwellings. In these cases it is usual to combine them with the acclimatization of swimming pools, given that the excess power generated in summer is taken advantage of for the acclimatization of the water in the swimming pool. In the event of there not being a swimming pool, it is necessary to eliminate the excess power generated by means of aerotermos, which are water batteries with a ventilator.

The Solar cooling systems consist of using the hot water generated by the solar thermal power installation to feed an absorption machine, which is capable of cooling water by means of hot water. These systems also require the installation of a cooling tower.

In the facilities for industrial processes it is usual to carry out installations which achieve temperatures superior to 100 ºC .In these cases, solar vacuum collector tubes are necessary, whereas for applications with temperatures between 50 y 60 ºC flat solar collectors are used.

According to the technical code for buildings, these installations must have a contract for maintenance so as to assure their correct functioning during their life cycle.


Biomass boilers
Biomass boilers use pellets as a source of energy. The pellets are small portions of pressed and dried forestal mass. The substitution of gas-oil boilers for biomass boilers is one of the tendencies which are occurring in private dwellings and collective installations such as rural houses, hotels…

An important aspect so as to be able to promote this type of installations is the fact of ensuring the raw material at a good price. It is important to have suppliers and distributors of the pellets near to the zones where they are to be consumed.


Heat pump
Even when energy is not officially consider renewable, the heat pump is one of the most efficient machines, thus many consider it another renewable energy source, especially when used with geothermic energy.

Advantages of an installation with a heat pump:
• High thermal performance
• Requires little maintenance.
• Easy installation.
• Does not require auxiliary power equipment.


Domotic installations
A domotic installation is based on including intelligent systems in the facilities of the dwelling. The installations are:
• Illmination
• Acclimatization
• Segurity
• Communications

They can be carried out while the new dwelling is being constructed or once it has been built. To be able to have them installed in existing dwellings technologies which work by means of radiofrequency, infrared are used and even using existing wiring to connect the devices.

These installations allow us to:
• Reduce the power consumption of the dwelling.
• Improve the security, not only against burglary but also to protect the installations themselves (flooding, gas leaks...).
• Improve comfort.
• Facilitate the adaptation of our installations for the uses we put them to: remote control, ease of configuration…


Inmotic installations
Deals with domotic installations for buildings, principally for tertiary use, such as offices, hotels, sports facilities, residential homes, schools…
The difference with respect to domotic installations, seen above, is the quantity of elements to be controlled, such as the control of other installations, which is the case of domotics are not included. Thus the installations which it will be necessary to control are:
• Illumination
• Acclimatization
• Security and safety
• Fire prevention
• Access control
• Communications
• Power consumption

The aim of an inmotic installation is the integration of all the facilities so that a building enjoys:
• Improved the global power efficiency of the building, manifesting itself as a saving of power
• Improved comfort for the people who find themselves in the building.
• Easier maintenance of the installations, thanks to the information made available which will help reduce the number of incidents in the functioning of the facilities. The integration of the same will also permit it to be monitorized remotely, increasing the possibilities of acquiring the type of maintenance services contract which is wanted.
• Improved security and safety of the building as a whole, thanks to the increased information available, as well as the improved access this information.


Power Audit
For a company to be able to know the state of its installations is essential to carry out a power audit.

By means of an audit a company will be able to know the amount of investments and the amount of power saving that can be achieved thanks to it. It will enable the company to know the consumption with regards to illumination, acclimatization, ventilation, Industrial processes…

The audit is presented with a report of the investments to be carried out to reduce the power consumption, classified by periods of amortization. Thus 3 levels of amortization are established:
Less than a year
Between 1 and 3 years
More of 3 years amortization
